University of Crete - Estate Management and Administration Company - Atlantis Group
Tout déplier

The ATLANTIS Group was established in early 2000 in Heraklion, within the University of Crete. Today, ATLANTIS Group operates as an independent Research Unit under the auspices of the Estate Management Company of the University of Crete (UoC-EMAC).

The orientation of the ATLANTIS Group activities was clear from the start: the Digital Economy and, more specifically, research in Internet technologies and innovative services that change the nature of our economies and societies; the understanding of emerging business models over the Internet and the Mobile Networks; and, the development of commercial activities incorporating innovative business models.

In this context, the ATLANTIS Group developed two complementary areas of activity: the research and the development of products and services (which is supported by the research activity).

Areas of activity

▪ Research focuses on the complexity of Digital Economy and the emerging organization patterns over the Web. UoC investigates business strategies deployed over electronic networks and, develops methods and technologies for effective information management over the Internet, the Mobile and the emerging ad hoc networks.

▪ The development of product and services offerings involves two interdependent activities, the development and management of complex websites (mainly sites with Information Institutional Portal characteristics), by using advanced content management techniques, as well as the development and operation of Mobile & Wireless Internet services.

Role in IRIS-Europe project

UoC has been the responsible partner of the component dedicated to the ICT development projects case studies (component 2). As a coordinator of the latter, it has shared its knowledge and know-how with the other partners to help them fulfil their assignments. UoC has not only coordinated this part of the project but has also participated in it producing case studies regarding the region of Crete. It has also worked on Crete regional analysis.

“Our participation in IRIS-Europe project has benefited us for several reasons. First, it gave the opportunity to Atlantis Group to cooperate with other entities from France, Portugal and Poland contributing to the exposure of the group to different cultures, experiences and ICT practices. This exposure is significant within the framework of the European Union, facilitating the understanding of the differences and similarities between the regions and opening up the way for the dissemination of the ICT integration projects. Secondly, Atlantis Group cooperated with experts in its objective of succeeding the goals of IRIS Europe, broadening the scope of its operation and contributing to the exchange of ideas in the ICT area. Thirdly, it gave us the opportunity to promote our work at three levels (regional, national and European) facilitating, thus, the take-over of new projects. Last but not least, the contact with the organizations and private firms, constituting the case studies in the Greek region, has given insight to the level of the ICT integration in the country illustrating the success factors and the deficiencies of the numerous projects. As a consequence, Atlantis Group has gained experience to a certain degree regarding the Greek reality in this field that it considers utilizing in further operations. ”
